For much of Eastern Europe, WWII didnt end in 1945. Thousands of anti-Soviet partisans kept fighting, refusing to accept communist rule.

In the Baltics, the Forest Brothers waged a brutal guerrilla war into the 1950s. In Romania, mountain insurgents resisted collectivization with the help of ex-officers and priests. In Poland, the Cursed Soldiers fought ambushes, spread underground newspapers, and paid with their livessome holding out into the early 1960s.

Hunted, tortured, erased from official history, these fighters waged a second war, armed with rifles, ideology, and the stubborn hope that the West would come to their aid.

In our linked Short, we explore another early Cold War showdown: How did Yugoslavia break away from Stalins control in 1948?
