When France fell in June 1940, the mighty Maginot Line was already bypassed and broken. But what did Germany do with it afterward?
The answer: not much. The Nazis stripped it for partsguns, generators, mines, and other hardware were removed to strengthen Germanys own defenses, like the Atlantic Wall. The bunkers and tunnels were left abandoned, some even flooded.
By the time the Allies liberated France in 1944, the Maginot Line was still therebut hollow, a relic of a failed strategy.
In our linked Short, we explore another case of wasted German military investment: Why did Nazi Germany build two massive battleships only to rarely use them?
