Yes, the U.S. really tried to weaponize bats in WWII.
Called Project X-Ray, it began with a wild idea from dentist and inventor Dr. Lytle S. Adams, who proposed strapping mini incendiary bombs to bats. Since Japanese cities were mostly wood and paper, the bats would roost in attics and raftersthen ignite devastating fires.
The military loved it. Thousands of bats were armed and tested. One experiment went too wellescaped bats accidentally burned down a U.S. airbase.
Ultimately, the project was shelved for something far deadlier: the atomic bomb. But for a moment, the U.S. nearly unleashed a squadron of flying firebombs.
