After WWII, Italy stood on the brink. The Communists and Socialists were gaining ground fast, and Washington feared Italy could become the next domino to fall to Moscow.
So, in 1948, the CIA launched one of its first covert operations. Millions of dollars were funneled into Italys Christian Democratssupporting propaganda, campaign logistics, and an anti-communist media blitz. Even the Catholic Church and Italian-American communities joined in, sending letters warning that a Communist victory would destroy religion and freedom.
It worked. The Christian Democrats won decisively, and Italy stayed in the Western camp. But the operation also wrote the CIAs playbook for future election meddlingfrom Latin America to beyond.
