In the fall of 1917, New Yorkers walking through Central Park encountered something impossible to ignore: a captured German U-boat sitting on the grass of Sheep Meadow. Once responsible for sinking dozens of ships in the English Channel, this enemy submarine had been transported across the Atlantic and reassembled in the heart of Manhattan as part of a massive World War I propaganda campaign.

In this episode of Its History, we uncover the story of UC-5 a German submarine turned symbol of victory and trace its journey from the depths of European waters to the streets of New York City. Why was it displayed for public access, how did it travel through Manhattan, and what ultimately happened to it after the war bond campaign ended?
