Did you know New York City is home to a 3,000-year-old Egyptian monument? Hidden in plain sight inside Central Park stands Cleopatras Needle, an ancient obelisk carved during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III long before Cleopatra, Rome, or even the idea of New York existed.

In this episode of Its History, we uncover how this massive stone traveled from ancient Egypt to Alexandria, crossed the Atlantic, and was hauled through Manhattan in one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century. We also explore why London received its matching counterpart, how Cleopatras name became attached to monuments she never touched, and why modern pollution now threatens a relic that survived thousands of years in the desert.
