Was Vichy Frances leader Philippe Pétain executed after World War II?
Not quite.
Between July 23 and August 15, 1945, 89-year-old Philippe Pétain stood trial for treason and collaboration with Nazi Germany. As head of the Vichy regime, he had overseen cooperation with the occupiers, including anti-Jewish laws and deportations.
The court found him guilty and sentenced him to death.
But the story didnt end there.
The jury recommended clemency due to his age and his status as the Victor of Verdun from World War I. In the end, Charles de Gaulle commuted the sentence to life imprisonment, fearing that executing a national war hero could fracture postwar France even further.
Pétain was imprisoned on the remote Île dYeu, where he died in 1951 at the age of 95. Condemned to die.
Spared for the sake of national unity.
History is rarely clean.
