Why did Stalin accuse Marshal Georgy Zhukov of Bonapartism after World War II?

In Soviet political language, Bonapartism referred to the fear that a successful general could become a Red Napoleon, using military prestige and popular support to seize power from the Communist Party.

After WWII, Georgy Zhukov was exactly that kind of figure. He had led major victories against Nazi Germany, commanded Soviet forces in occupied Germany, and became the public face of the 1945 Victory Parade in Moscow.

To Joseph Stalin, that made him dangerous.

By accusing Zhukov of Bonapartism, Stalin wasnt making a legal charge, he was sending a political warning. The message was clear: no general, no matter how popular, could rival the authority of the Party.

Zhukov was removed from power and reassigned to distant commands in Odessa and the Urals between 1946 and 1948.

Even after Stalins death, the label returned. In 1957, Nikita Khrushchev used similar accusations to dismiss Zhukov again, fearing his growing influence.

So Bonapartism wasnt really about ideology, it was about control.

A reminder that in the Soviet system, military success could make you a hero and a threat at the same time.
