Deep beneath a Polish hillside lie 300 miles of tunnels that once powered the economy of medieval Europe. The Zloty Stok gold mine produced as much as 8% of Europes entire gold supply at its peak yet today, most people have never heard of it. In this episode, we descend nearly 100 feet underground to explore what remains: flooded passages, an underground waterfall, a working mine railway, and the site of one of the deadliest disasters in the mines thousand-year history.
The story of Zloty Stok is one of monks, nobles, alchemists, war, and a catastrophic collapse that may have buried survivors alive. It is also the story of a woman who risked everything to save it and a family still searching for what the last German residents may have hidden before being forced to leave after World War II. What we found deep inside the mountain raises more questions than it answers.
