At an investors table what counts is not your spreadsheet. It is what people can hear in your teams voice.
Tell me in the comments what you would have done with seven days, 200,000 owed and 4,000 in the account.

What It Cost one decision, one number, what it actually cost. Every day.

WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

The claim: a week before Christmas 2018 I was told I had seven days to return 200,000 złotych, about 53,000 dollars. There was around four thousand in the company account. A few weeks earlier we had an investor signed for five million złotych against twenty percent of the company and the whole deal came apart on one sentence said at the table under someones breath: my manager whispered that we would not last until April.

Numbers that appear in it:
December 2018, a week before Christmas seven days to return the money
200,000 złotych owed, about 53,000 dollars
around 4,000 złotych in the company account at that moment
the earlier deal: 5,000,000 złotych for 20 percent of the company

What this does NOT claim: that the investor was a fraud. He behaved exactly the way somebody behaves when he has just seen the risk. The claim is narrower risk is not read in a spreadsheet, it is heard at the table.

Question for viewers: open question what would you have done with seven days, 200,000 złotych owed and 4,000 in the account I answer everyone.

TRANSCRIPT

A week before Christmas I was told I had seven days to return 200 000 złotych, about 53 000 dollars. There was around 4 000 złotych in the company account.

Because a few weeks earlier it looked completely different. After long negotiations we had an investor: 5 000 000 złotych for 20 percent of the company, and when that happens your whole road lays itself out for years ahead.

Now here is the part that matters, because this is the whole point. At that table one sentence was said, and it was said under someones breath. My manager leaned in and whispered that we would not last until April.

That sentence cost 5 000 000. Because an investor does not read risk in a spreadsheet, he hears it at the table, and what he heard was exactly the thing he had been afraid of.

Now careful, because I do not want you taking too much from this. It does not mean the man was a fraud. He behaved exactly the way somebody behaves when he has just seen the risk. It means something narrower: at an investors table what counts is not your spreadsheet, it is what people can hear in your teams voice.

That conversation ended in a private house. At the table sat the investor, his son and a man from security, and that is where I heard the deadline: seven days.

And I sat there shaking, and I had no idea what to say. There was one number and one deadline in my head, and I knew nobody was going to pat me on the back and tell me it would somehow work itself out.

So tell me honestly, because I actually want to know. What would you have done, hearing you have seven days for 200 000 złotych, with 4 000 in the account? Write it in the comments. I answer everyone. What It Cost.
