From the early 1920s up to the infamous day of Pearl Harbor, both US and Japanese military planners had tried to envision a future war in the Pacific. Would there be a Great All-Out Battle between two equally matched battle fleets? Or a row of engagements between smaller task forces? What if the war turned into a battle of attrition, where submarines and cruisers harassed the supply lines? Through war games and theoretical models, naval tacticians began to establish doctrines on how they wanted their navies to move and fight.
