In 1947, one of the deadliest anti-colonial uprisings of the 20th century eruptedand was quickly erased from memory.
Madagascar had been a French colony since 1896. Thousands of Malagasy soldiers had fought and died for France in both world wars, only to return to poverty and repression. When calls for reform were ignored, nationalist anger boiled over.
On March 29, 1947, insurgents launched a massive uprising. Frances response was brutal: bombings, executions, torture. Tens of thousands were killed before the rebellion was crushed in 1949.
Official French figures claimed 11,000 deadMalagasy sources say over 80,000. The truth remains buried, along with the victims.
In our linked Short, we explore another suppressed colonial story of the era: How did Indonesias fight for independence become one of the bloodiest postwar conflicts?
