A century ago, Niagara Falls was one of North Americas most important industrial power hubs. Beneath the waterfalls, engineers carved massive underground tunnels into solid rock to power factories, mills, and some of the worlds first hydroelectric plants. These hidden systems helped decide the War of Currents and proved that electricity could be transmitted across long distances.
Today, most of those Niagara Falls tunnels are sealed, flooded, or forgotten. In this episode, we explore the abandoned hydraulic canals, tailrace tunnels, and underground infrastructure beneath Niagara Falls from early industrial wheel pits to the catastrophic collapse of the Schoellkopf Power Station, and the few tunnels that still survive below one of the worlds most famous natural landmarks.
