In the decade after World War II, Africa began to rise. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, millions who had fought in European wars returned home with a dangerous idea: freedom should not stop at Europes borders. From the Gold Coast to Kenya, from Sudan to the Congo, colonial rule began to crack under the pressure of protest, rebellion, and political awakening.
This episode explores how Africas revolutionary decade unfolded from peaceful mass movements to brutal counterinsurgency wars, from negotiations and elections to detention camps and guerrilla warfare. We follow the paths of leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, Sékou Touré, Julius Nyerere, and Patrice Lumumba, and the movements that reshaped an entire continent.
From the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya to Ghanas independence, from Sudans negotiated break from empire to Guineas defiant No to France, this is the story of how colonial rule collapsed and why independence came with both hope and heavy costs.
By 1960, the age of European empire in Africa was over.
But the struggle for true sovereignty was only just beginning.
This is the birth of modern Africa and the moment the colonial world finally broke.
