Across the United States, thousands of massive concrete arrows lie abandoned in deserts, forests, and mountaintops. Some stretch up to 70 feet long. Most point toward nothing. At least, thats how it looks today. But these strange symbols were once part of one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in American history.

In the 1920s, as the U.S. Post Office raced to deliver mail by air, pilots had no radar, no GPS, and limited instruments. To keep them alive, the federal government built a nationwide system of rotating beacon towers and poured gigantic arrows at their bases, creating invisible highways in the sky. In this episode, we uncover how these air mail beacons worked, why the system was abandoned, and where you can still find these forgotten arrows today.
