But beneath that dream lies a dangerous reality. From the very beginning, developers ignored geological warnings, building entire neighborhoods on unstable marine terraces and eroding bluffs.

Over the decades, powerful storms, landslides, earthquakes, and relentless coastal erosion have turned Pacifica into one of the most precarious towns in America. Homes have fallen into the ocean, entire neighborhoods have been condemned, and the city now faces an ongoing battle it may never win. This is the story of how Pacifica was built and why its slowly being erased.
