At its peak, Ocean Falls was one of the most self-sufficient communities in British Columbia a company town carved out of a remote rainforest fjord, complete with a 600-bed hotel, an Olympic-caliber indoor pool, and a pulp mill that powered everything. For decades, thousands of people called it home, raised families there, and even produced world-class athletes. Then the economics turned, the mill closed, and the town emptied almost overnight.
Today fewer than sixty people live there year-round, accessible only by seaplane or boat. But in 2017, an entrepreneur noticed something that the original mill builders had also seen over a century earlier: the waterfall was still there, still generating power, and almost none of it was being used. What followed was perhaps the most unusual tech startup in Canadian history a Bitcoin mining operation built inside the ruins of a paper mill, in one of the wettest places on earth.
This is the story of Ocean Falls: how it was built, why it was abandoned, and whether cryptocurrency can do what pulp and paper could not.
