In 1986, 30 million Americans watched Geraldo Rivera crack open a vault beneath Chicagos Lexington Hotel the former headquarters of Al Capone expecting to find cash, weapons, and the secrets of Americas most infamous crime empire. What they found instead was dirt, old bottles, and one of the most watched television moments of the decade. But the investigation also uncovered sealed staircases, a tunnel crossing to a neighboring hotel, and a question that never quite went away: what was actually hiding beneath Chicagos streets during Prohibition?
This episode traces that question from its roots. Chicagos war over alcohol began the same year the city was founded, escalated into a literal street battle called the Lager Beer Riot in 1855, and ultimately fed directly into the conditions that made Prohibition-era Chicago the most criminally charged city in the country. From the Uptown tunnel network linking the Green Mill and the Aragon Ballroom, to the documented speakeasy beneath the Green Door Tavern, to the 60 miles of secret freight tunnels that became the citys most famous urban myth this is the real story of what the gangs built underground, what they borrowed from existing infrastructure, and what historians say they almost certainly did not do.
The truth turns out to be more interesting than the legend. Al Capone painted the doors of his illegal bars green because the police were already paid off. He didnt need secret railways he owned the city above ground. What remains below it, though, is still worth exploring.
