Idaho has no coastline, no harbor, and not a single mile of tidal water yet it has a fully operational seaport. The Port of Lewiston sits 465 miles from the Pacific Ocean, at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers deep inside a basalt canyon. Getting it there required one of the most ambitious inland waterway engineering projects ever completed in the American West: a chain of eight dams and navigation locks that transformed two of the continents most violent, unrunnable rivers into a calm, commercially navigable corridor stretching from the Idaho interior all the way to Portland.
The story begins with Lewis and Clark struggling to survive the Snake River in 1805, and ends with a million tons of wheat a year moving through a port that most Americans dont know exists. In between lies a decades-long fight involving farmers, railroads, the Army Corps of Engineers, a drowned archaeological site, and a lobbyist who died before seeing a single barge leave the dock.
