Lęk przed śmiercią wśród osób chorych na raka jest czymś bardzo powszechnym. Choroby terminalne bardzo często wywołują niepokój i stres, a także mogą doprowadzić do depresji, myśli samobójczych i znacznego obniżenia jakości życia.

Współcześnie psychiatria nie ma zbyt wielu narzędzi, by takim osobom pomagać. Inspirując się badaniami z lat pięćdziesiątych i sześćdziesiątych, wielu naukowców postanowiło ponownie zainteresować się działaniem substancji psychodelicznych.
