North Brother Island once housed Riverside Hospital, a quarantine facility built to isolate and treat some of New York Citys most contagious patients. From smallpox to typhoid fever, the hospital played a key role in the citys battle against infectious diseases. Most famously, it was the long-term residence of Typhoid Mary, the first known asymptomatic carrier of typhoid in the U.S. Today, the hospital stands in ruins, a haunting reminder of public health struggles from another era. Join us as we explore the rise and fall of North Brother Island Hospital.
