Before WWII, the word teenager barely existed. You were a child then an adult. But after the war, booming economies and mass culture created something new: youth culture.
By the late 1940s, magazines were writing about teenagers. By the 1950s, it was Elvis, drive-ins, denim, and rebellion. But this wasnt just about music and milkshakesit was about ideology.
In the Cold War, the U.S. showcased its teens as symbols of capitalist freedom. American youth cruising in convertibles stood in stark contrast to Soviet regimentation. Pop culture became politics, and teenagers became proof that democracy worked.
In our linked Short, we explore another Cold War cultural clash: Why did post-war Europe embrace American pop culture so quickly?
