Yes, and it came terrifyingly close to happening.
In 1942, British scientists working at Porton Down developed Operation Vegetarian, a biological warfare plan designed to cripple Nazi Germanys food supply. Five million cattle cakes were infected with anthrax spores and prepared for aerial deployment over German farmland.
The idea was simple and horrifying: livestock would eat the bait, civilians would consume the meat, and both animals and people would die from anthrax. Tests conducted on Gruinard Island proved devastatingly effective all test animals were dead within days.
By 1944, the weapons were ready. But after the success of Operation Overlord, the plan was scrapped. Scientists warned that the long-term effects would be catastrophic, leaving farmland contaminated for decades a warning confirmed by Gruinard Island remaining lethal until its cleanup was completed in 1990.
