A quarter mile east of Navy Pier, a red light flashes across Lake Michigan every five seconds. The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse has been guiding ships into one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes since 1893 built during a Worlds Fair, fitted with a gold-medal lens from Paris, and home to keepers who lived for weeks at a time in near-total isolation on the open water. One of them started eating newspapers. None of that is why its in trouble.

The real problem is what happened after the Coast Guard walked away. Automated in 1979, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, briefly handed to the City of Chicago, and then essentially abandoned, the lighthouse has spent decades quietly rusting from the inside out while nobody agrees on who should fix it. The Le Paute lens arguably the finest optical instrument ever installed in an American lighthouse never even made it to its intended destination in California. It took a century to get there. The tower it left behind may not last much longer.
